(1877- 1968 ) - Watercolours He was an English genre painter who spent most of his working life in Bristol, where the Bristol School of artists formed around him.. Akvarell är en målningsteknik där färgen läggs på i transparenta skikt på ett tjockt, lätt sugande papper. Papper av högsta kvalitet är syrafritt och framställt av bomullslump. Det kan variera kraftigt i olika vithetstoner och tjocklek. Ytans ytstruktur kallas gräng och finns av flera slag. Akvarellpapper levereras i block med limmade kanter runt om, så att papperet håller sig slätt, när det blir fuktigt av färgen. Lösa papper kan prepareras genom att fukta igenom det ordentligt med rent vatten och sen klistra/tejpa upp det på en styv skiva. När papperet torkat har inbyggda spänningar utjämnats, och det bubblar sig mindre, när akvarellfärgen läggs på. Akvarell målas ofta med en tjock pensel som kan hålla mycket vätska, samtidigt som den kan formas till en mycket fin spets. Den finaste kvaliteten görs av mårdhår eller sobelhår. Mycket smala linjer kan göras med hjälp av tunna spetsiga penslar eller dragstift, som egentligen är avsedda för för tuschritning. Gamla tiders stålpennor för bläck duger också för detta ändamål.
Hans Olaf Heyerdahl
Swedish, 1857-1913 Norwegian painter. He was born into an enlightened but conservative family, his father being an engineer, occasional architect and writer of Nordic saga poetry, and he spent his childhood and youth in the rapidly expanding town of Drammen, 40 km from the capital Christiania. In 1873 he was admitted to the Kongelige Tegneskole in Christiania, where he studied under Peder C. Thurmann, a landscape artist trained in Desseldorf. For more advanced training, Heyerdahl was obliged to go abroad, and in 1874 he enrolled at the Munich Akademie. He was encouraged by Professor Ludwig von Lefftz (1845-1910) to give up landscape in favour of history painting and portraits (e.g. the artists Christian Skredsvig, 1876, and Eilif Peterssen, 1877; both Oslo, N.G.). In 1877, under the guidance of Professor Wilhelm Lindenschmit (1829-95), Heyerdahl finished his most inventive and brilliant composition, the Expulsion from the Garden (Oslo, N.G.). Using over life-size figures, set in a barren tempestuous landscape, Heyerdahl skilfully contrasted the youthful rage of Adam with the resigned despair of Eve. This sombre work won him a third prize medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878.
Francesco Francia
1450-1517 Italian Francesco Francia Locations He trained with Marco Zoppo and was first mentioned as a painter in 1486. His earliest known work is the Felicini Madonna, which is signed and dated 1494. He worked in partnership with Lorenzo Costa, and was influenced by Ercole de Roberti and Costa style, until 1506, when Francia became a court painter in Mantua, after which time he was influenced more by Perugino and Raphael. He himself trained Marcantonio Raimondi and several other artists; he produced niellos, in which Raimondi first learnt to engrave, soon excelling his master, according to Vasari. Raphael Santa Cecilia is supposed to have produced such a feeling of inferiority in Francia that it caused him to die of depression His sons Jacopo Francia and Giulio Francia were also artists.
